Wild Hog Wire Paneling: Everything You Need to Know

February 8, 2022

Whether building a new deck or remodeling an existing one, homeowners want options that highlight their personality, improve the visibility of their landscape and are DIY friendly.

Wild Hog Railing Panels provide the curb appeal and ease of installation that today’s discerning customers are looking for. Plus, Wild Hog will complement your existing treated wood and metal baluster line by giving your builders and homeowners more options for their railing systems.

The popular Wild Hog Railing panel is a building product specifically designed for the consumer and professional contractor. Wild Hog developed a decorative railing panel that is easy to transport and install. These panels can be transported in most SUVs and small pickups and they can replace the balusters on any deck material including metal, wood and composite railing, like Trex.

What Are Mesh Railing Inserts?

Hog wire deck railing panels are new to the building world and fast becoming the replacement for treated wooden balusters and round metal pickets. They are available in 3’x6’ and 3’x8’ dimensions for the deck, as well as 5’X6’ for stair railings. The panels are manufactured with a 4”x4” mesh that conforms to most building codes.

What Makes Wild Hog Panels Different?

Wild Hog panels have a steel mesh that has a woven or welded cross point pattern for residential use. Extremely sturdy and durable, the panels are manufactured from ¼” thick or ⅜” thick steel wire and are available in black, galvanized and stainless steel. The style is rustic industrial and is a great match for ranch-style homes and the increasingly popular cabin in the woods.

How Are They Made?

Wild Hog panels go through a multi-step manufacturing process:

  • First, they are placed in a phosphate bath.
  • Then, they are electro-galvanized.
  • Next, they experience another phosphate bath.
  • Afterward, a primer is applied.
  • Finally, the panel is powder-coated and ready for your customers

Multiple Purpose

Unlike treated wood pickets or other railing systems, Wild Hog panels are used for many garden needs, including:

  • Fencing
  • Arbors
  • Trellises
  • And more

Wild Hog Panels vs. Wood and Metal

Treated wood pickets have been the standard railing system for decades, but with the increasing price of wood, metal balusters have become more popular. However, both wood and metal pickets are labor-intensive and obscure homeowners’ views.

Wild Hog panels provide the safety and security of a 4” on-center railing system while allowing an almost unobstructed view.

Installing Wild Hog Panels

The panels can be installed in wooden frames or in a custom track system developed by Wild Hog. When utilizing their track system, installation time can be cut in half. There are no special tools required.

The basic tools required include:

  • Tape measure
  • Speed square
  • Level
  • Hacksaw
  • Pencil

The easiest way to install the panels involves using the Wild Hog Track Kit, which contains enough U-shaped steel tracks to mount a single panel as well as the screws to attach it to your deck components.

Simply cut the track to the desired dimensions, attach it to your wood or aluminum deck parts, slide the panel in and attach the top piece of wood or aluminum with the last bit of track. Before completing this last step, any cut ends should be painted with Wild Hog’s touch-up spray to avoid rust.

If you want to build the railing system out of wood, the panels can be encased in treated 2×4 boards or rip them down to picture frame the panels. The system easily adapts to your customer’s needs.

Freedom Fill for Trex Transcend

Trex Transcend deck systems have top and bottom rails that will accommodate the Wild Hog panels by using Freedom Fill inserts. They hold the railing snugly in place and give your customers the benefits of a composite rail system with the look of Wild Hog railing.

Simply install Freedom Fill inside the top and bottom rails. Cut two pieces of Hog Track to length and install on either side of the panel to the support post. Trim the top of the panel to fit and slide it into the Trex bottom rail. Attach the top rail and you are finished.

It’s also a good idea to use Hog Tusks on the cut ends of the Wild Hog Rail to prevent any rusting and secure panels from movement.

Are the Panels Competitively Priced?

Wild Hog Railing panels are very competitive with treated wood and other metal balusters.

Remember, Wild Hog panels are really competing with other prefabricated railing panels, which can be far more expensive and often have extended lead times if custom sizes are needed. Wild Hog panels can be cut to size on the job site, allowing the project to get started right away — saving time and money.
